Ubuntu Linux 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin is released

Developers of open source operating system Ubuntu has announced the release of their latest operating system, Ubuntu 12.04 with Precise Pangolin as its release code. This new version brings several improvements and updated software packages with user interface display change.


Ubuntu 12.04 is including the release of LTS (Long Term Support) up to 3 years for desktop versions and 5 years for server versions. Ubuntu 12.04 is the first LTS release that receive long-term support up to 5 years. Previous LTS desktop versions only support up to 3 years.

Ubuntu 12.04 is using Unity desktop environment that has been used by Ubuntu since version 11.04 version, and this new release has many changes.

The most significant changes in Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin is the addition of HUD (Head-Up Display) menu that make users easier to access menu, the user just simply press a button to activate HUD and start typing what to do with the user.

As quoted from ArsTechnica, Ubuntu 12.04 brings several applications changes that have been installed by default in the operating system.

For music player software, Ubuntu 12.04 will use Rhytmbox to replace Bansee that have been used Ubuntu since 11.04 version.

For Office application, Ubuntu 12.04 offer the latest version of open source office software, LibreOffice. Ubuntu also improved hardware support for better compatibility.

Ubuntu is available with wide selection of desktop environments like KDE (Kubuntu) and LXDE (Lubuntu), but the developer announced that Kubuntu 12.04 is the latest release of Kubuntu supported by Canonical.

Ubuntu is available for desktop and server platforms and supports 32 and 64 bit architectures.
