Google + : A "Ghost Town" Social Network

Google may claim that their social networking site, Google +, has 100 million users until early April 2012. However, a study says otherwise, Google + is like "ghost town". Google + has many residents but minimal activity, that's roughly how to describe Google + condition for now. Based on a survey carried out by RJ Metrik research institutions to 40 thousand Google + users based on random sample, it was noted that the activity of Google + users are quite low.

According to RJ Metrics survey, each post gets an average of only one "+1" (similar to Like on Facebook) and a reply anyway. In addition, there are about 30% of Google + users who only make  a public posting once in social networking and never again make second posting.

Active users on average do a post every 12 days, even 15% of Google users who have made 5 + posts never again make a public posting. The number of publicly posting of all active users on average continues to decline each month.

Research carried out by RJ metric is only focused on the activity of posting. This makes Google responds to that research.

"By just doing the tracking in public posts, the study is flawed and does not accurately represent the range of activities and sharing that occurs in Google +," Google said in a statement to the tech site, Fast Company.

According to Google, Google +  activity is more private because users share with the people in their "Circle", no need to openly share ideas, photos or videos to the world. This is not the first study that describes Google + as a "ghost town".

The results of survey that was conducted by research firm comScore in January 2012 also said, most users only spend 3.3 minutes on Google +, while most users "hang out" for 7.5 hours on Facebook.

Pew Internet & American Life Project also found 52% of Facebook users and 33% of Twitter users are actively involved in daily social networking.

Google's Vice President for Engineering, Vic Gundortra, in an article in The Times ever called Google + as social blanket that wraps the whole experience at Google.

In other words, users who log-in with Gmail account and then use YouTube or Google search engine, they are accounted for using the Google +. In this way, Google says Google + is the fastest growing product in the history of the company.
