Iran's Telecommunications Ministry began to restrict the use of electronic messages (email) from foreign service in corporate banking, insurance, and mobile operators. The government wants the company to use Iran's Mail, a local email service that have addresses domains ending with .ir (dot IR).
Not only employees, restrictions on the use of foreign mail applies to the customers of the company engaged in three industry sectors. Government agencies and universities must also use the email address from domain .ir.
The Iranian government is not directly banned GMail, Yahoo and Hotmail. Reported by the AFP on Tuesday (5/15/2012), this step is part of government efforts to secure and monitor the communications of their citizens, by cutting off internet connection to foreigners and global email service providers.
Iranian Telecommunications Minister, Reza Taghipour, previously stated, will build their own nationwide Internet network to create a "clean internet" which is expected to be completed in August 2012.
Besides email, the government will also limit the use of search engine sites like Google or Bing, who will be replaced by Iranian Search Engine.
Iranian people are already familiar with censorship. This country frequently cut off internet access in early 2012. Last time, they block access to all web sites overseas that operates on the Secure Socket Layer.
