Intel chips for Macbook Air and Ultrabooks

To support slim notebook Macbook Air and Ultrabooks products, Intel is preparing the chips to satisfy vast majority of users who want to upgrade from Core 2 Duo laptop into Ivy Brige processors that well known as Core i-series. Intel seems will focus on power efficient chips for Ultrabooks products. This chips designed with "M" or "U" suffix, and said that will draw less 20 watts than desktop computer.

Power efficient chips of course will affect its appearance. You can't compare the 17W chip with 25W or 35W chip that usually used by common thick laptops. But after all, the new chip is more than enough to satisfy the user who previously use Core 2 Duo laptop.

Here are the list of Intel's most power efficient Ivy Bridge processors :
  • Core i5-3427U
It runs at 1.8GHz and operate at 17W. The lowest speed is operate at 14W. The highest can reach 25W and can operate up to 2.3GHz.
  • Core i7-3667U
It runs at 2GHz and operate at 17W. It can runs up to 2.5GHz at 25W.
  • Core i3-3217UIt runs at 1.8GHz and operate at 14W. This chip has no option to increase the wattage. The lowest speed is operate at 14W. This chip has slower graphics with maximum 1,050MHz. But it also support DDR3 1,600 MHz memory and has 3MB chace memory.
  • Core i5-3317UIt runs at 1.7GHz. This chip also has no option to increase the speed. There is turbo boost that support up to 2.4GHz for both cores and 2.6GHz for a single core. The graphics chip can be overclocked.
  • Core i7-3517UIt runs at 1.9GHz. This chip support until 25W power envelope to increase the speed to 2.4GHz. There is turbo boost that suppoert to 2.8GHz for two cores and 3GHz on a single core. This chip has 4MB of cache memory.
Ivy Bridge chips include both CPU (central processing unit) and GPU (graphics processing unit) inside. Below are the table of comparison of Intel's Ivy Bridge chip.
